If you have a website or blog, or working with everything related to Internet, will likely have to know a little about search engine optimization (SEO). A good way to start is familiar with common terms of trade, and below you will find 20 of them. (For those who already know about SEO, consider this article as a reminder of the keys to SEO!).
- SEM : Stands for Search Engine Marketing, and as its name implies is marketing services or products through search engines. SEM is divided into two main pillars: SEO and PPC. SEO means Search Engine Optimization, and is the practice of optimizing web sites to make your pages appear in organic search results. PPC means Pay-Per-Click, and is the practice of buying clicks from the search engines. The clicks from sponsored listings in search results as displayed on Google.
- Backlink : Also called Inlink or simply link is a link to another website that points back to your own website. Backlinks are important for SEO, and that directly affect the PageRank of any web page, which influence your search rankings.
- PageRank : PageRank is an algorithm that Google uses to estimate the relative importance of pages around the web. The basic idea behind the algorithm is the fact that a link from page A to Page B can be seen as a vote of confidence from Page A to Page B. The greater the number of links (weighted value) to a page, therefore, the greater the likelihood that this page is important.
- Linkbait : A piece of linkbait is a published web content on a website or blog in order to attract as many backlinks as possible (in order to improve your search rankings). Usually a piece is written, but can also be a video, photo, contest, or anything else. A classic example of linkbait are the "Top 10" tend to be popular social bookmarking sites.
- Link farm . A link farm is a group of web sites where all the links point to each web page in order to artificially increase the PageRank of all sites on the farm. This practice was effective in the early days of search engines, but today is already a spam technique (and therefore you might lose penalized).
- The text anchor : The anchor text of a backlink is the text that you can click on the website. Having keyword rich anchor text helps with SEO because Google may associate these keywords with the content of your website. If you have a weight loss blog, for example, help your positioning in the search if some of your links retrocesole put "weight loss" as its anchor texts.
- Nofollow : The nofollow attribute is a link used by web site owners to tell Google not to support the website that has made the link. - Meta Tags : As the title tag, meta tags are used to give search engines more information about the content of your pages. The meta tags are placed inside the HEAD section of HTML code, and therefore are not visible to human visitors.
- Algorithms search : Google search algorithm is used to find the most relevant web pages for any search query. The algorithm considers over 200 factors (according to Google itself), including the value of PageRank, the title tag, meta tags, the content of the website, the domain age and so on.
- SERP : Search Engine Mounts results page. It is basically the page you get when you search for a particular keyword in Google or other search engines. The amount of search traffic to your website will receive depends on the classification to be within the SERPs.
- Sandbox : Google is basically a separate index, the sandbox, where you put all the newly discovered web sites. When the web are in the sandbox, they will not appear in search results for regular search queries. Once Google verifies that the site is legitimate, it's out of the sandbox and on the main index.
- Keyword Density : To find the keyword density of any particular page simply divide the number of times the keyword is used by the total number of words on the page. keyword density to be an important factor in SEO, as early algorithms put a great emphasis on it. This is not the case anymore.
- Excessive keywords : Because keyword density is an important factor in the early search algorithms, webmasters began to game the system to artificially inflate keyword density within web sites. This is called keyword stuffing. Today this practice does not help, and can also penalize you.
- Coverup . This technique involves performing the same website show different content to search engines and human visitors. The aim is to ensure that classified page for specific keywords and then use the incoming traffic to the promotion of products or services unrelated. A canonical URL, therefore, is the standard address to access a specific page within your site. For example, the canonical version of your domain can be http://www.domain.com http://domain.com place.
- Robots.txt : This is not just a file, located in the root domain, which is used to inform search robots on the structure of the web. For example, through the robots.txt file can block specific search robots and restrict access to specific folders within the website section.
